Porcelain Dental Crowns

A dental crown is tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over the tooth to cover the tooth, restore its shape and size, and improve its appearance. A crown is cemented into place and fully encases the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies above the gum line.

What Does a Dental Crown Do?

  • Protects week or decayed teeth from breaking or holding together parts of a cracked tooth.
  • Restores an already broken tooth or severely worn-out tooth.
  • Covers and supports a tooth with a large filling when there is not a lot of tooth structure left.
  • Holds a dental bridge in place.
  • Covers a dental implant.
  • Provides a cosmetic modification to your teeth allowing you to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

  • On average, dental crowns can last between 5 and 15+ years. The life span of a crown depends on the amount of “wear and tear” it is exposed to, how well you follow good oral hygiene practices, how often you receive regular checkups and cleanings at the dentist, maintaining a healthy diet and your personal mouth-related habits. (Avoid habits like grinding or clenching your teeth, chewing ice, biting fingernails, and using your teeth to open packaging).

Can Children Get Dental Crowns?

  • Yes children can get dental crowns; however they are often temporary Stainless Steel (Silver Caps) until either their baby tooth falls out or if the tooth is a permanent tooth it will be replaced by a permanent custom laboratory fabricated crown when they are a proper age.

What are the Material Options for Dental Crowns?

There are several options

  • Zirconia Crowns (Bruxzir Crowns).
  • All Ceramic Crowns.
  • Porcelain Fused Metal Crowns.
  • Full Metal Crowns.

How to Maintain and Care for Your Dental Crown?

  • No special care is required for a dental crown, however it is very important to remember that simply because a tooth is crowned it does not mean the underlying tooth is protected from decay or gum disease. Practicing good oral hygiene including regularly brushing, flossing and getting dental cleanings are key to preventing additional dental treatment.
  • It is often recommended to wear a Nightguard to prevent grinding and wear on the crown which can result in material fracture with some types of crowns.
