While wisdom teeth removal is a commonly dreaded procedure for patients, it is necessary for most. Working with an experienced cosmetic dentist can help to ensure this procedure is as painless as possible.

Wisdom teeth comprise the final set of molars that come in when most people are in their late teens, or at times, during early adulthood. When these teeth are properly aligned, they can prove to be a valuable asset. Unfortunately, in many instances, the wisdom teeth are not aligned properly and must be removed. Misalignment can cause wisdom teeth to become positioned in a horizontal manner and as a result, adjacent teeth can become damaged or crowded. In some cases, nearby nerves and even the jawbone can become damaged as well. Wisdom teeth may also need to be removed if they do not completely erupt through the gum and are impacted. When this happens, it leaves an opening in which bacteria can enter, resulting in infection, swelling, pain, and illness. Impacted wisdom teeth are also more prone to gum disease and tooth decay due to difficulty of flossing and brushing.

If you are not certain whether your wisdom teeth are properly positioned, you must have it checked to see the condition they are in. By taking an X-ray exam, our dentists can determine the positioning of your wisdom teeth in order to take precautionary measures. If you begin to feel pain near the back of your lower or upper jaw, you should not delay consultation, as it can result in serious damage to your other teeth. Even if you are not currently experiencing pain, make sure to attend your dental visits every six months to prevent problems in the future.

If it is determined that the wisdom teeth need to be removed, one of our cosmetic dentists will walk you through the steps. We numb the surrounding area.
