Root canal by Los Angeles Dentist

If you’ve ever had a large cavity, cracked tooth, or severe toothache, you might have heard our Los Angeles dentist talk about getting a root canal.

Getting a root canal is just as comfortable as having any other type of basic dental work done — whether it’s a crown or a filling — thanks to modern numbing medication (local anesthesia), high-tech equipment, and options for sedation dentistry (like laughing gas.)

In fact, when you get a root canal at Crystal Dental, we make it our goal to minimize any discomfort.

What Happens During Endodontic Treatment

During a root canal, the tooth is numbed and opened up (usually through the area of decay) so that the nerve inside of the tooth’s inner chamber can be accessed. Next, our Los Angeles dentist removes the dying or infected nerve and cleans the surfaces of the hollow canal. Finally, a filling material is placed down into the canal, all the way to the tips of the roots.

This entire process eliminates bacteria from inside of the tooth and prevents it from becoming re-infected. As a result, the remaining tooth structure can remain stable for several more years.

After getting a root canal, you’ll also need to have a crown made and placed over your tooth. Because endodontically teeth are no longer “alive,” they can chip and wear down faster than others. A crown prevents that from happening.
